Courses

The Office for Clinical Research (OCR) offers courses designed to provide clinical research professionals with education and training on the regulations governing clinical research. These courses were developed to equip the research community with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct clinical research in the highest quality manner. The OCR Education and Outreach Team assist clinical researchers in maintaining compliance with conducting research at Emory or at Emory affiliates.

The Emory University School of Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The Emory University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

In addition, OCR provides resources on credentialing and certification to assist the clinical research professional in performing his or her job functions in clinical research.

Key Concepts in Clinical Research for Investigators

This online course was developed upon advice and approval of the Clinical Trials Executive Committee, the Clinical Trials Task Force and other clinical trials advisory groups to provide supplementary content for clinical investigators specific to clinical trials involving human subjects. The course curriculum is comprised of a series web-based training courses/modules indented to enhance an investigator’s ability to comply with the requirements of Good Clinical Practices, to properly delegate authority, to manage clinical trial operations, to recognize and avoid research misconduct, and to improve the outcomes of monitoring and audits performed by sponsors and the Food and Drug Administration.

Basic Life Support for Emory University Research Staff

This 4 hour course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages, use of an automated external defibrillator and relief of choking. The course is video-based with instructor-led discussion and simulation. Students participate in, practice and complete various skills and learning stations.

This Basic Life Support course is open only to Emory University research staff who need it for credentialing.

How to Conduct Clinical Research At Emory: The Basics

This is a two-day course for new Clinical Research Coordinators (CRC), created by four Emory University Office of Research Administration (ORA) units: Institutional Review Board (IRB), Office for Clinical Research (OCR), the Office for Research Compliance (ORC), and Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).

The course is designed to provide a basic framework of the roles and responsibilities for the CRC at Emory and to equip them with the tools to assist them in successfully performing in their job at Emory. The intent of the course is to:

  • Introduce the new CRC to the federal regulations governing the conduct of clinical research including relevant institutional policies and procedures at the Emory clinical research enterprise.
  • Provide an integrated and practical overview of the operational procedures to facilitate compliance in clinical research at Emory.

Course Prerequisites - Prior to attending the course, the student will:

  1. Complete the following Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) modules at http://www.citiprogram.org.
    • Basic/Refresher Biomedical
    • Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
       
  2. Complete the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training at https://elmprod.emory.edu.

  3. Complete pre-test, which will be provided to you after registration.

  • Emory Healthcare (EHC) Credentialing: To help meet patient safety needs and assist in attaining regulatory compliance requirements, EHC requires credentialing of Emory University non-MD clinical research staff that have direct patient/study participant contact at The Emory Clinic (TEC), the Emory University Hospitals (EUH), Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital (EUOSH), Emory Children's Center (ECC) and Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital (WW).   • EU Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO): One of the roles of the EHSO is to review clinical research protocols that utilize biological toxins, recombinant DNA, human cell, tissues, microorganisms pathogenic to humans, plants, or animals, regardless of the funding sources. This office provides training courses in: blood borne pathogen training, radiation safety training, and training in the safe transportation of hazardous materials. This course is mandatory for anyone who participates in offering, shipping, or preparing shipments of hazardous materials to include infectious and biological substances.   • Protection of Human Research Subjects Training Program: The Emory Institutional Review Board (IRB) requires certification of anyone conducting human subjects' research activities at Emory. This means anyone working directly with human subjects or with identifiable data or biological specimens for research purposes under Emory University auspices must be certified through the online Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) Program.
